Fact: Many individuals with mental illness are not affected by suicidal thoughts and not all people who attempt or die by suicide have mental illness.

Myth: Once an individual is suicidal, they will always remain suicidal.

Fact: Active suicidal ideation is often short-term and situation-specific.

Myth: Most suicides happen suddenly without warning.

Fact: Warning signs—verbally or behaviorally—precede most suicides.

The Suicide Prevention Alliance of Chautauqua County was formed when local professionals from the mental health and other health care fields saw a great need in the community for supports and education around suicide prevention. The Alliance is dedicated to protecting and promoting life by fostering shared responsibility through raising awareness and community supports while embracing hopefulness and resiliency in the Chautauqua region.
